The ‘Aberdeen Lives’ Oral History Project
an illustrated talk by Ken McHardy
After Ken McHardy retired from his full-time post as a physician at ARI in 2015, he became involved in assisting David Northcroft, his former English teacher (they met in Aberdeen Grammar School 1967), with an ongoing oral history project.
David had a career in Education, latterly as Deputy Principal of Aberdeen College of Education, and while studying for a PhD on the history of Scottish education, he became an affirmed oral historian. Following his own early retirement he has spent many years collecting the memoirs of several hundred folk across the North-east from a wide spectrum of backgrounds. His work has led to the publication of four illustrated volumes describing the breadth of rural and urban eye-witness experience across the 20th century.
Ken has prepared a talk for us that will briefly explain how the oral history project was developed, undertaken and published and will then share excerpts of the words and pictures sampled from the project’s latest book published late last year;
Aberdeen Lives Vol 2: Aberdeen at War and Peace 1900-2000.
